1541
A Spaniard, Pedro de Valdivia, founded Santiago. The Incas ruled the northern part of Chile and the Araucanos ruled over the Southern part.
1818
Chile won its independence thanks to Bernardo O'Higgins and an Argentinian, José de San Martin. O'Higgens organized Chile's two-party system and centralized government that they have today, he was their dictator until 1823.
1830
Diego Portales became the dictator and started a war against Peru.
1836-1839
The war began because Diego Portales was disturbed by the increasing trade competition from Lima and the threat of a combined Peru-Bolivia alliance.
1879
Chile fought the War of the Pacific with Peru and Bolivia until 1883, they gained Bolivia's only connection to the sea, Antofagasta, and also other land from Peru.
1837
Portales was assassinated by rebels, and almost 5 decades later Jose Manuel Balmaceda became the 11th President. Jose Manuel Balmaceda was the first liberal President to unify all of Chile's regions.

Congress froze Balmaceda's budget
1891
Balmacada said that the budget of 1890 will be the budget of 1891. Congress thought is was an act of dictatorship and stripped him of his presidency and a civil war broke out.
1891
The Civil War of 1891 lasted for 6 months and Chile lost over 4,000 of their 2 and 1/2 million population.
Jorge Montt, a naval officer, was appointed to be president on October 18, 1891 and was president until September 18, 1896 because Jose Manuel Balmaceda was pitted against Chile's congress. During his presidency, he captured various ports and collected the tax money they gave off.
1942
Juan Antonio Ríos became President of Chile during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was originally pro-communism but ended up fighting alongside the allies in 1944.
1970
Salvador Allende became president and established a relationship between Cuba and the People's Republic of China and showed them the communist/Marxist way of doing things.
1973
Salvador Allende was assassinated by a CIA supported military group headed by General Augusto Pinochet who put a stop to the constitutional government in Chile that lasted 46 years.
